Dear Ms. Stephanie:

Glad to have you as my most important English writing course instructor. As an immigrant, English writing is the course which is most difficult, and I am most eager to learn. In 2013, I came to New York. My first impression of the city is Broken. Broken JFK Airport, Broken highways, and Broken American little wood houses. I’m from China where the government crazy at infrastructure. The cities in China are much better than New York. At least they look better. I had a law degree in China, so I started working at law office in New York. In three years of work, I found that I fell in love with big apple. This city has a magical Charm that makes me fall in love with her but can not express it in words. Unfortunately, in this three year, I also found practice in law is not the ideal career I want. Therefore, I was back to school in 2017. I was planning to get an education degree then to be a Chinese teacher. However, I found English is an insurmountable obstacle for me. After careful consideration, I decided to become a civil engineer. I want to rebuild this city. Today, I’m a sophomore in civil engineering. This is the first step to my new career and my new life. I spent first 3 semesters in Queens College to learn basic course. There were 2 options in front of me. First one is joining a engineering program which Queens College cooperates with Columbia University. The second one is transfer to City College. Honestly, I chose City College because of the cheaper tuition. I will try my best to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam when I graduated. I think the most important thing for a general writing is clarity. Writers should try their best to make readers understand his article easily. Reading should be a pleasure thing not a struggle. In engineering fields, accuracy is promoted to the priority. An engineering article must be as objective as you can make them. At the end of the semester, I hope I can write technical documents formally. I hope I can use the right vocabulary in my essay. I may write a topic about Natural Hazards and structure at end of the semester.

Sincerely,

Junyong Hu
